MMF Presidential Candidate.......or Not

Frank Godon has authored his thoughts on what I assume is a reference to the Cybersmokesignals website lawsuit. The Manitoba Metis Federation has been embroiled in a very lengthy and costly battle against a website ran by a Metis fella who published a little more than he could chew. The MMF member in question, Terry Belhumeur subsequently wrote a letter of apology to the Metis corporation, still the MMF board of directors continue to wage what to me is a personal battle, that apparently is financed by the MMF members and Canadian taxpayers. The case continues.

Lawsuits I must admit that I have received more correspondence than anticipated since announcing Dec 13 my decision to run for MMF president. I’m not going to comment on “my eligibility” as were asked in some of the questions, since I can defend all when the time comes and the election is called. The first issue I will address is the issue of our MMF’s past practice of suing Metis citizens who were vocal about the practices of the Federation and the case that was unfairly prosecuted against former MMF President and Lt Governor Yvon Dumont........

Just as I create a short post on the possibility of a contender for the MMF top job come MMF election time next year, teacher/Metis veteran/political activist and blogger Frank Godon has made the first move in what should be the most exciting Manitoba Metis Federation election in history. Never has a candidate for the Presidency announced his/her intentions at such an early stage. Kudos to Frank !! I know George Jones put it best when he sang "The Race Is On" !!

And so it begins – It wasn’t an easy decision to make, but I’ve fallen in line with a group of Metis patriots and can no longer stand by and watch as our leaders take us down the paths of servitude - a condition in which one lacks liberty especially to determine one's course of action or way of life – and unaccountability to the people. President Reagan once said: “To sit back hoping that someday, someway, someone will make things right is to go on feeding the crocodile, hoping he will eat you last--but eat you he will.” I can no longer sit back hoping someone will “make things right”. So with this in mind, I’ve decided to run for the president’s position in the next MMF election that according to the constitution should be held no later than Sept of 2010.

It is no secret that I have been vocal concerning Metis politics here on the internet at various websites and blogs. So I figured what better place to announce my candidacy then on a website. This is not about me as the “person” who is going to make things better for the Metis people of Manitoba. This is about a group of grassroots people who are tired of the same old practices that our leaders engage in once they take power. A group that has gotten together mainly through the internet and have spoken against this misuse of power. I have the credentials to run for president and when the idea was presented to me, I thought why not. As the months go by until this election is called, I will be listening to you the Metis people of Manitoba. The Metisonline.ca group will have a forum for you to tell us what you want to see in leadership.
Here are the main points of my platform.
I. The first issue we will deal with is the “Membership issue”. We believe that the Metis people of Canada deserve more respect than is shown by current levels of government – the MMF included. So we are going to respectfully demand meeting with the federal government to secure for the Metis people a national Identification Card. This will be based upon our current process for determining who a Metis person is, but will have a national credential to it. Membership! Sounds like something you use at a golf course or CO-OP store. The time has come for the government to live up to the constitution that says the Metis are one of the three that make up the Aboriginal peoples of Canada. Our First Nations cousins can use their treaty cards across Canada – we demand the same for the Metis.
II. The next important issue is transparency of how the MMF does business. We propose that every six months monies paid to the president, vice presidents, board of directors, and anyone who draws money from the MMF (except for workers) be posted on the MMF website. I recently seen what the Metis leaders in BC have done in disclosing what they make as far as wages and making their expenses available to anyone who wants to look and thought that this is what our provincial Metis government needs to do as well. Also in line with transparency we want an internal audit of the Federation done from the last 5 years to account for where taxpayer’s monies have gone.
III. Education – we have what is known as an educational institution called the “Louis Riel Institute” but its not functioning at what it could be. As an instructor in one of the largest universities in Russia I see a lot of potential in taking our LRI and making it into a functioning university. A place where not only our Metis students can come to learn but other Canadians as well.
IV. Settlements – Land claims, Veterans, Residential schools, etc. We feel that this is the old merry-go-round that the government loves to keep us in. They give us money to pay lawyers to fight their lawyers to settle something that is rightfully ours. And our current leaders grab this hook line and sinker. Common sense tells us that this is a wrongful misuse of taxpayer’s monies and something needs to be done about this. On issues such as Veterans and Residential school survivors – if they deserve it they need to be paid it.
V. Presidential term – we believe that the constitution should be changed to a set date of elections every four years and the president can only sit for 2 consecutive terms should they win a second term.
VI. Board of Directors – we believe that the board of directors position should be a paid position and that their terms should be only two years – there are some who have suggested that the number of BOD’s be reduced to one per region – I am currently thinking this one over and it does sound appealing to me.
This is just a start of my (our) platform and as time goes on I will explain more in depth and I welcome any questions or suggestions anyone may have.

A special message for those out there who don’t bother to vote come election time – If there is something wrong, those with the ability to take action have the duty to take action. You have the right to vote for the next president of the MMF – exercise that right – and vote for me.

You must admire Frank's courage and can't help but be a little inspired with his announcement. This will be a David vs Goliath campaign(pardon the pun) Godon has a daunting, but not impossible task ahead of him. With his early jump into the fray, it certainly will mean a few more votes, but will also bring about more scrutiny.

Community Housing Managers Of Manitoba To Receive 4.3 Million

The MMF has certainly been making inroads with the affordable housing crises in Manitoba. This agreement signed yesterday with the province is a good step forward. I applaud The Manitoba Metis Federation and its' new housing board Member rep Edward Charrier. This partnership with the MMF and the government, now bring to $ 9,000,000, the annual funding allotted to this subsidiary of the Manitoba Metis Federation. The new money, works out to an average of $6,667 per home. A really good start.

WINNIPEG – Today the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) signed a historic new agreement with the Manitoba government, which will enable it to renew 645 public housing units in rural, northern and remote Manitoba communities.

The first of its kind in Western Canada, the agreement will allow the MMF to develop a comprehensive and strategic approach to housing renovations, as opposed to managing housing project-by-project. It will also provide $4.3 million to the Community Housing Managers of Manitoba (CHMM), a subsidiary of the MMF, to renovate up to 645 public housing units it currently manages on behalf of Manitoba Housing.

“The Metis family is the bedrock of our Metis Nation, and proper housing enables our families to have a good start in raising our children and grandchildren,” said MMF President David Chartrand. “This partnership with the province builds on the strengths that the MMF has already proven in this industry over the years.”

.....Manitoba Metis Federation Election watch : with this announcement from the MMF Pres, and with all the positive movement from the MMF recently, Chartrand will have an easy time getting re-elected next year. The next contender will have to show him/her self soon. Aspiring MMF board of directors?presidential candidates will have to step out of the norm. Usually the person will announce their candidacy right after the Pres drops the election date. There will be no use for a whirlwind 30 day campaign.....that wont do it.
This housing agreement certainly has made me a believer in the "new" CHMM and the MMF..............By the way, whatever happened to former MMF board of director/CHMM portfolio holder Darrell Deslauriers ???

This past weekend here in Winnipeg was one that will be etched in many people's minds forever. On early Saturday morning in a neighborhood known as middle class, two young men were tragically shot to death at a house party. The ages of the two deceased was shocking...the young men were both 18...more shocking was the ages of those charged....three youths aged 16,16 and 17 and a 18 year old "adult" have been charged with second degree murder. Once again a horrific news story involving youth crime in Winnipeg has made national headlines ;

This incident was troubling to me on a few accounts. Firstly, the ghastly way in which these two were gunned down. Two guys at a party with friends who were surprised by some out of control kids hell bent on making a statement of some sort. Secondly, my daughter has had one of the murdered boy's sister sleep over at our house a few times so needless to say my entire family feels for her clan. Third, my son had been invited to that same party, and had indeed been present at a Halloween bash at the same premises earlier this year, but decided not to go. Now I realize that the cry from the public for swift a harsh justice for the accused is well warranted, but at what time and cost are we all going to realize that we have to do something proactive NOW to help stamp out the senseless violence that has not only resulted in many deaths here in Winnipeg over the past few years, but has also gripped our fair city in a fear that isn't healthy nor conducive to achieving any sort of "community" Damn, I won't even let my daughter play in the park across the street anymore !!! I think of these six kids...two that will never see their families again, and another four, who will never see any semblance of normality in their lives ever again. Countless family members on both sides of the story that are also adversely affected. A public who grows increasingly wary for their safety. Now what can be done ? I have been toying with a rehabilitative/supportive plan that I believe will help put the brakes on the problems that I feel, have been contributing factors to the decline in our youth of today. We cannot continue to throw dollars and energy away by simply locking up young offenders....by god, don't get me wrong, these four who played a part in killing these innocent men better be detained for many years to come.....but what will become of these "drains on society" once they get released. For that matter, what about the hundreds of criminals who get released into our communities with no bloody rehab program, no support base , or no hope for a job or any of the mainstream trappings of success ? These type of criminals get released on a daily basis. I am emotionally drained with hearing the fates of the Matthew Reynolds and Tyler Hawulas of our city. Tired of reading about another youth charged with a criminal offence who has "gang ties" Is it parenting ? I believe that that has to be considered in most cases. Is it a lack of opportunities for our youth that has caused such disillusionment and susceptibility to committing these sickening random acts of murderous violence ? I believe that it is a bit of both with a whole lot of misunderstanding as well. After we get over the shock and awe of this horrific, sickening, and saddening night of horror, we must focus our energies towards putting a stop to this ever increasing circle of youth violence and crime that has proven to be a detriment to not only our families, but the entire city of Winnipeg. We can't allow ourselves to get desensitized to these incidents.

I caught some flack and a little concern last week when I deleted the posting that showed how much the Métis Nation British Columbia paid its' board members, President and Vice. Never, have we seen such openness when it comes to Metis political representatives. The funny thing is ( or maybe not so funny, depending on your outlook) is that the expenses were not as much as one would have expected. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that some of the BC politicos took less than 30 K in some instances.
Now, I'm not naive.....there are ways to make money in the Metis orgs. other than just being a board member. But we can say with a great degree of certainty that being a board member is not what it is all cracked up to be, from a financial standpoint......now we can wait to see if the other Metis governments follow B.C's progressive lead and publish their respective BOD's fees.........The newest website on the Metis web block www.metisonline.ca continues to create a stir among the web readers. By now we all know that the web master is none other than Darcey Jerrome of the highly popular Dust My Broom fame. Speculation is that a candidate for the Manitoba Metis Federation's top job will surface in the upcoming days via Metisonline. The MMF and its' current President, David Chartrand, will have to call an election within the next 10-11 months, so you can expect some positioning to take place in the next few months.......don't kid yourselves, ther eis underground campaigning going on right now.........
I liked Darcey's recent article ; Look! It's Tom Flanagan! Everybody Panic! . I do recall a flurry of anti-Flanagan sentiment from the MMF and with just cause, but I do applaud the Metis leaders Poitras, Chartand, Doucette, Dumont and Lipinkski for ensuring that our Metis voices are heard loud and strong...who the heck should be scared of this Flanagan guy anyway ? He's not the first, nor will he be the last to argue against Metis rights. I still think that the Conservatives and minister Strahl have, and will continue to work in a progressive manner with the Metis people.......theres' going to be a lot of Metis Olympic torch bearers wearing our infinity symbol and maybe a sash or two as many Metis have bee honored with their inclusion in the torch relay. Check out the Metis political sites to get detanils, but I know for sure that my cousin and MNBC supporter Colin Sanderson will be doing our family and the entire Metis nation proud sometime at the end of January........MMF President Chartrand was talking about the Metis contributing 2 billion dollars to the Canadian economy and only getting $ 90, 000, 000 in funding grants in return......don't know about you but I agree that with statement to a degree.......like I wrote in an earlier comment ; give us Kapyong and we'll call it square. Imagine the economic development that could take place with that stretch of land ?...........I have to do it.......hahahahahahahahaha and lmao at the Banjo picking inbreds AKA The Saskatchewan Roughriders......its' too bad that they only have ten fingers and were wearing cleats otherwise someone would might have counted been able to count to thirteen !!!.....I have again posted below, the MNBC board member, this time in PDF format.

I have to note the "Meet the team" link on the site. It insinuates that the link will have a list of MMF candidates for next years election.
More news to come in the next few weeks concerning the MMF elections along with some interesting names that are being thrown around as possible candidates.
MN & S remains open to new candidates and ideas, this site will have more of a presence during the next MMF election process. Election night coverage hit counter went well over a thousand visitors that evening so you can expect MN & S to be a valuable tool for candidate platform advertisement.

Frank Godon of Dust My Broom, has gifted us with this video clip of the recent trip to Juno Beach to commemorate a memorial in honour of Metis veterans.

I want to say that it was a great honor to be with my father on this journey back to Juno Beach. He has in the last 10 or so years been able to open up as to his experiences and trauma during the D-Day landing and the 11 months he was kept as a Prisoner of War. This trip helped to calm some of the demons that have haunted him through out the years.

I wish to thank those who organized this trip, as in my opinion it went very well. Prior to this trip I was very critical of the way it appeared to have been handled, and although I still believe that there were more "delegates" than needed, and a better system needs to be in place to select attendees for these types of pilgrimages, the administration did one hell of a job. I was very proud of the way both of our presidents conducted themselves. Watching David as he handled the media, always giving the "spotlight" to our Veterans, was something that impressed me on this trip. The other thing I want to mention was the way Glorian and Cindy organized everything so that every Veteran was carefully taken care of, given the status of the most important people there. These ladies were number one at their jobs and I really don't think we could have done without them.

I want to say that taking my father on this journey was a challenging one, as his near vision in his only good eye is not good, so he bumps into and trips over quite a few things - his far vision is fine and I am amazed at how well he can see items further than 5 feet away from him. Also he has 0% hearing in his left ear and only 20% in his right ear and stubbornly refuses to use his hearing aids. His speech is almost non existent from damage done to his vocal cords when he was a POW. So I was there to be his sight, hearing, and voice. Our start in Toronto got off to a bad start as the airline attendant, thinking my father was going into the "executive class" line, first spoke to him (which was of no use since he couldn't hear her) then grabbed him, startling him and knocking him off balance and as he tried to keep himself from falling he grabbed onto one of the line poles thinking they were solid and ended up on the floor with cuts to his face (high left cheek) and to his wrist (which got tangled up in the line pole). I looked at her and asked her what the hell she did that for as I was telling her that he was with me and I had his boarding pass, which she ignored. He was shaken but we kept going onto the plane as we had a doctor with us who looked at him later.

The ceremony on November 11 at the Juno Beach center was attended by many dignitaries from both Canada and France. The noon meal was a special one for my father and the other Veterans as they dinned with Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians. Later at the center speeches were given by MMF President David Chartrand, and MNC President Clem Chartier while the Veterans and guests were entertained by the youth who accompanied us. The main crowd wasn't allowed in for the unveiling of the cart as there was just room for the veterans and dignitaries, but we all got to see later.

Metis Veterans Remembered

Today, Remembrance Day, Please take time to say a prayer for safety of those Canadian Military men and women who are stationed throughout the World, whether in Peace keeping missions or in the current Field of Afghanistan. Lest We Forget their dedication, courage and sacrifice as they are called to Duty. For those that have gone before us, let us join together in remembering them, and the many families, mothers, brothers, sisters and friends who saw their loved ones leave and never return. With honor and gratitude, for the ultimate sacrifice, I am sharing the following video of the Repatriation of fallen Soldiers home to Canada.

The contribution of Metis Veterans and fallen soldiers is being honored today in a Commemoration Ceremony.

Métis Nation veterans, youth and dignitaries are in France at the Juno Beach Centre in Courseulles-sur-Mer, to dedicate a memorial to Métis who served in the World Wars. The dedication ceremony will be held at 3:00 pm, local time (9:00 am EST), November 11, 2009 at the Juno Beach Centre, Courseulles-sur-Mer, France.

"I am proud to participate in this historic event, where the sacrifices made by Métis servicemen and women are receiving the attention they deserve," said Minister Chuck Strahl, Minister for Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and non-Status Indians. "I look forward to the November 11th special dedication service at Juno Beach Centre where on behalf of all Canadians, I will thank Métis veterans for the contributions and sacrifices made during the two world wars, the Korean war and the battle in Afghanistan and peacekeeping missions around the globe."

Ottawa, ON -- The Métis National Council (MNC) will be hosting its 2009 General Assembly on November 21 – 22, 2009, in Vancouver, BC.
“The General Assembly is very important for Métis Nation citizens,” said MNC President Clément Chartier.
“Democratically elected representatives from across the homeland will be coming together to debate and decide the future agenda of the Métis Nation in Canada.”
General Assembly delegates are representatives from the MNC’s Governing Members; the Métis Nation British Columbia, the Métis Nation of Alberta, Métis Nation – Saskatchewan, the Manitoba Métis Federation, and the Métis Nation of Ontario. All representatives are democratically elected by province wide ballot box elections.
President Chartier will begin the 2-day Assembly with his “State of the Nation” address, which will set the stage for discussions on the challenges and opportunities facing the Métis Nation.
Major topics of discussion will include the continuing cooperative work with the Federal Government under the Métis Nation Protocol, the implementation of Métis rights, and Métis Nation participation at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games.
All Métis Nation citizens are invited to observe the General Assembly. It will be held Nov. 21 – 22, 2009 at the Renaissance Vancouver Hotel Harbourside, 1133 West Hasting St., Vancouver, BC.

After the bitter infighting and eventual criminal charges relating to voter fraud, I truly believe the Métis Nation Saskatchewan is on the right path.

These membership drives are very important to a recovering Metis Nation of Saskatchewan ;

Greg Lawrence, Southern Plains Métis Local 160 president, told the Times-Herald the Métis Nation Saskatchewan (MNS) executives coming to Moose Jaw would be the same as Premier Brad Wall coming to Moose Jaw and the fact this organization is making its first presence locally after two years is a big deal.

Do you want to know if you qualify for Métis status? Are you curious about what in required in order to register as a Métis person and attain legal documentation? If so, then perhaps you should attend the Métis registration information meeting in the Heritage Inn at 7 p.m. on Nov. 9.

As such, he encourages anyone in the Friendly City with Métis registration questions to attend the upcoming information session.

Why Didn't They Just Donate The Cash To The Metis Vets ?

A thought came to mind after Frank sent this next e mail....instead of spending the supposed donated cash in sending the MMF execs, board members and spouses, why not contribute that very cash directly to the Maniotba Metis vets ??
Do you think Oliver Boulette or Don Roulette's attendance is absolutely neccessary ?
How about Dave Chartrand's wife ? His assistant Cindy Miller ?

Derryl - you left out something very important - the article states

Common sense tells me that $160,000 has been earmarked for this trip with $80,000 coming from veterans affairs for the veterans - so with only 3 veterans going that breaks down to $26,666.67 per veteran - hmmm I don't think my father received anything near that!!!

And if they as David stated "nearly matched the amount received from the government by fundraising in their communities so more Métis,including young fiddlers and square dancers, can attend the unveiling of the exhibit." then each of the fiddlers (3) and square dancers (10) should get about $6,153.85 each for this trip - maybe someone can contact one of these performers and ask them if they got that much.

We all know this is bullshit - none of these executives are paying their way - and if they are then they can prove me wrong by submitting the paper work that shows where the money from Veterans Affairs is going, and the money that they raised is going! THEY WON'T BECAUSE THEY CAN'T!!!

By the emails I've received I'm not a popular guy with the office right now and I wonder if David won't try to throw me out of the plane somewhere between Toronto and Paris. )))))

Good morning......no snow so far and thats' a good thing. Well, I noticed this morning that the Winnipeg Free Press ran an article on the Manitoba Metis Federation's upcoming trip to Juno Beach.
Métis veterans honoured at last is an interesting read. I particularly noticed this paragraph;

"The exhibit highlights the history of the Métis in Canada and includes a Red River cart. The symbol of Canada's Métis will accompany the veterans and Métis youth during Remembrance Day events at Juno Beach this year. Close to 50 people are leaving Nov. 8, with just a handful of the elderly Juno Beach veterans able to attend."

According to the trip itinerary , the number of Metis vets is closer to three with chaperones. Dancers and entertainers amount to 10 attendees with the remaining 31 comprised of MMF staffers, board members and their spouses. One of those trips for the chosen few. I wonder why President Chartrand failed to mention that a majority of those going are board members, MMF executives and their spouses ??............alright, now to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and their pathetic display of football ability yesterday against the Montreal Alouettes ; We will not win the Grey this year, we should beat Hamilton this weekend in front of maybe 23,000 fans at CanadInns stadium but to have hopes that the Blue and Gold have a chance to compete for the championship is nonsense. Quarterback Michael Bishop has proven to be erratic and without a lick of football sense ; Coach Kelley is an ignorant man who should be gone next year. His rant against Bob Irving of CJOB news is nothing short of stupid ; Mike Kelly Explodes on CJOB (AUDIO) He has since apologized to the fans but I for one will be either watching this weekends' game on TV, or listening to CJOB and the always classy, Bob Irving.........thanks for participating in the H1N1 poll that is on the sidebar of this site. The poll is tracking numbers that suggest up to 80% will not take the H1N1 Influenza Vaccine.

I am not going to getting the shot at this point. My concerns echo that of others who are concerned about the speed of which the vaccine got to market. Do what you will but 7 of my family are opting out..........The Métis National Council will be holding its AGM but you would never know it from their website. MN & S has learned that the meeting will take place on the 21-22. Will this traditionally secretive group, let Metis citizens what the heck they're up to ??............A Coalition of Concerned Metis Citizens has popped up in British Columbia where it seems President Dumont is never without his detractors. Daryl Piper, who is the coalition's spokesperson, is touting the CCMC as the official opposition of The MNBC. In other MNBC news, my distant cousin Colin Sanderson was selected by some MNA insiders as an Olympic torch carrier. He will be carrying the torch at the end of January.......The Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards are going to be held this weekend at the MTS Centre on November the 6th. Bid name artists like George Canyon and Buffy St. Marie are headlining this celebration of Aboriginal talent in the music business........In other Aboriginal music news, a new Manitoba Aboriginal music collective has been created ;NEECHIE MUSICIANS ASSOCIATION has been put together by local Aboriginal blues veteran Billy Jo Green. Not sure if I support a group that wants to according to their website, combat "bigotry and racism" in the business...Huh ? I have found that in the music business, if you're good enough. you play, if not, your on the outside.
