WHERE AS: Article III (4)(a) of MMF By-Law No. 1 (the MMF
Constitution) provides in part that:
4. Classes of Membership
a. Individual Member
Current Members:
All current members shall be required to provide a genealogy including
supporting evidentiary documents completed a recognized institution to

objectively verify the members Historic Metis Nation Ancestry no later than
September 1, 2012.
AND WHEREAS Article IV (5) of the Constitution provides:
Termination of Membership
Individual membership shall terminate upon the happening of one or more of
the following events: viz,
5. It is determined by the Federation that the member has not
provided the genealogy including supporting evidentiary
documents that he or she objectively and verifiably meets the
definition of Metis in Article III 1 and the individual membership

requirement in Article III and the individual membership
requirement in Article III 4 (a).
AND WHEREAS the Board of Directors of the MMF have determined that
a number of current members will not be able to comply with the
requirement to provide the genealogy including supporting evidentiary
documents by September 1st 2012.
BE IT RESOLVED that Article III 4 (a) of the Constitution be amended by
deleting the words “no later than September 1st 2012” and substituting
therefore the words “no later than September 1st 2014”.

CALGARY — The Alberta Court of Appeal has agreed to hear the case of a Metis man challenging Alberta’s Metis hunting rules.

In a four-page decision, Justice Constance Hunt granted leave to appeal the conviction against Garry Hirsekorn.

Hirsekorn was charged in 2007 after he shot a mule deer in the Cypress Hills.

In December 2010 a provincial court judge found Hirsekorn guilty of hunting out of season and illegal possession of wildlife.

A Court of Queen’s Bench justice upheld the conviction in a November 2011 decision.

The case is strongly linked to a landmark decision on Metis hunting rights, the Powley decision, which established a 10-part test adapting aboriginal hunting rights to Metis people.

In Hunt’s decision, he said Hirsekorn should be granted the chance to argue how the Powley case applies to Metis living on the Prairies.

The Metis Nation of Alberta applauded the ruling and said it goes to the heart of a 2007 Alberta government decision to cancel a province wide Metis hunting agreement.

“We are extremely pleased that the Alberta Court of Appeal rejected the Alberta government’s arguments to deny leave to appeal and that the court has agreed to hear this important case for all Alberta Metis,” Audrey Poitras, Metis Nation of Alberta president, said in a statement.

A hearing before an Alberta Court of Appeal panel is expected this spring.

The board meeting was to be held July 1st Canada Day, a day before MMF President David Chartrand's wedding.

PM Harper Entertains Metis National Council Prez Chartier

OTTAWA, Feb. 16 /CNW/ - In what has become an annual event, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has opened his door to National Aboriginal Leaders to discuss economic development and other pressing matters. Métis National Council President Clément Chartier represented the Métis Nation at yesterday's meeting held on Parliament Hill.
He told the Prime Minister, "the Métis Nation Protocol signed in 2008 set the foundation for a solid relationship between the Government of Canada and the Métis Nation." President Chartier added, "We are looking forward to working with your Ministers and we are open for business."
President Chartier indicated that the Métis Nation has been fully engaged in the Federal Framework for Aboriginal Economic Development which fits into the Métis Nation business model. The model is based on solid, professional management through economic development institutions such as Métis capital corporations offering small business loans, venture capital corporations and education and training centres including the Gabriel Dumont Institution.
Federal Interlocutor for Métis, the Honourable John Duncan and the Minister responsible for Human Resource Development, the Honourable Diane Finley also attended the meeting, which lasted about an hour in the Prime Minister's office.
Last month, Minister Duncan hosted a very successful Métis Economic Development Symposium to which he invited his provincial counterparts from the five Western provinces, Métis Nation leaders and industry.
President Chartier explained, "the Métis Nation wants to bring the Symposium to the regional level to directly engage industry partners through round tables and trade shows. I believe the Métis Nation Protocol is an effective instrument which, for Canada and the Métis Nation, is yielding good dividends."
The first regional round table is being organized for next month in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
In addition to Métis Nation Economic Development projects, President Chartier also touched on certain employment and training matters, the outstanding Métis Residential School issue, struggles with Health Canada and support for Métis Veterans.
Prime Minister Harper listened closely to President Chartier's words offering welcome comments that the Métis should not fall through the cracks. After President Chartier's discussion with the Prime Minister, he came away confident the infrastructure projects raised during the last meeting with the Prime Minister will soon be announced.

The MNC represents the Métis Nation in Canada at the national and international levels. The Métis Nation's homeland includes the 3 Prairie Provinces and extends into Ontario, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories and the northern United States. There are approximately 350,000 - 400,000 Métis Nation citizens in Canada, roughly a quarter of all Aboriginal peoples in the country.

Hi all.

Been extremely busy these past few months as I landed a job as an event coordinator for a major Aboriginally owned club....not enough coin to quit my other gig as a paint supervisor, so as you see, things are a little crazy in my so called life.

I have been hearing rumblings in the past few months that have indicated all is not well at 150 Henry(MMF headquarters).

Word out of the north is there are concerns regarding the MMF's Local management board.

Board members have also been asking !! Human resources dept ??

So, I'm still committed to the Metis news of the day/Metis issues.....being involved in one way the other is never an option for me...I love it and live it !

Lets' get some useful dialogue going again. The Supreme court's recent decision is enough to warrant many queries, going forward.

Many people have shared with me their dismay at the site being so dead lol.

MMF Seeking Billions As Case Proceeds To The Supreme Court Of Canada

OTTAWA -- The fate of a three-decade-long court battle over Métis land claims in Manitoba will be decided today by the Supreme Court of Canada.
The high court will announce this morning whether it will agree to hear the land claim case that has been wending its way through the courts since 1981.
Manitoba Métis Federation president David Chartrand said he is confident the court will decide in the Métis' favour.
"We feel there is no doubt," said Chartrand.
The case dates back to land claims promised to Métis settlers in 1870 when Manitoba joined Confederation. The Manitoba Métis Federation has argued Manitoba and Canada failed to live up to the 1870 Manitoba Act requirements to divide nearly 566,560 hectares of land among 7,000 Métis children living in the province at the time. The MMF has long argued although land or money in lieu of land was eventually distributed to the children, the process took too long and wasn't done the way the act intended.
Among the complaints are that the Métis were not allowed to choose the land allotted them as it was instead meted out by a lottery. Certain lands were deemed too valuable to be included in the lottery.
It also took more than a decade to complete the land claim, and in the meantime settlers and speculators got hold of much of the land.
Courts in Manitoba ruled against the MMF claim, saying the legal requirements were followed.
The Manitoba Court of Appeal ruled against the Manitoba Métis Federation in July 2010. The MMF is seeking financial compensation.

Metis Community Settles With The Government For $ 9,000,000 and Land

The New Democrats here in Manitoba are certainly showing their support for the Metis Nation ;

A central Manitoba Metis community has reached a $9.2-million compensation settlement with the province for flooding damages caused by diversion projects on the Churchill River.

"This is a very important day in the history of the Cross Lake community," Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Minister Eric Robinson stated in a press release.

"This historic settlement agreement provides community leaders with the tools they need to create a prosperous future for the people of the community and I commend everyone who worked so hard to realize this milestone."

The longstanding dispute dates back to April 1992, when the Cross Lake community council filed legal action against the province and Manitoba Hydro.

The three parties agreed in April 2003 to sign an agreement-in-principle that would guide negotiations for a resolution.

It took another seven years but the settlement will go a long way to "provide the community with new means to continue to improve the quality of life for its residents," Robinson said.

The financial compensation, to be paid out over a 13-year period, includes provisions for the transfer of approximately 5,000 acres of land intended to help with the expansion of the growing community. A new resource management committee will also help the council in having a voice in natural resource activities in the Cross Lake trapline district, according to the news release.

Newly incorporated

The settlement signing coincided with an announcement that the community council has completed the process to incorporate under the Northern Affairs Act.

"Through incorporation, the community gains the powers and responsibilities of a municipality including a greater degree of autonomy," said Robinson.

"This authority will provide the community with new means to continue to improve the quality of life for its residents."

The community also celebrated the official opening of its new town offices and emergency services building, built with a $3 million in funding from the province.

Cross Lake is located approximately 520 kilometres by air north of Winnipeg. It is adjacent to the Cross Lake Cree Nation.

This initiative will enable information to be compiled about the types of health issues and services being used by Métis and to monitor health trends over time The confidentiality and privacy of participants will be protected at all times and Alberta Health and Wellness will not disclose personal information.

“This initiative and commitment of funding will better enable us to understand the health of Mtis and to address their health needs,” said Health and Wellness Minister Gene Zwozdesky. “I look forward to working in partnership with the MNA to develop more effective health policies and programs for Métis living in Alberta.”

“This is an important tool that can help us to improve the health of Métis Albertans,” said Audrey Poitras, President, Métis Nation of Alberta. “If a need or a concern is identified, we can take immediate steps to address the issue. It also enables us to proactively prevent illness and promote wellness among our members.”

The work also supports the goals set out in the longstanding Framework Agreement between the Métis Nation of Alberta and the Government of Alberta. The agreement was established to promote and facilitate the advancement of Métis by working cooperatively to develop and implement mutually acceptable methods of addressing the needs and aspirations of Métis and to preserve their identity and cultural heritage.

“This initiative supports our Framework Agreement with the Métis Nation of Alberta,” said Aboriginal Relations Minister Len Webber. “Enhancing the health and well-being of Métis is a goal we all share and this new health monitoring agreement will help us achieve that.”

The Alberta government has a clear plan for a strong economic recovery An important part of The Way Forward is maintaining support for programs and services Albertans need most, such as health care, education and safe and vibrant communities.

In a stunning turnaround from MNBC’s normal practice of hiding pertinent
financial information from the citizens, the Métis Nation British Columbia has posted on its own website their 2009‐2010 MNBC Annual Report that includes the financial statements covering the financial affairs for 12 months from April 1st, 2009 to March 31st, 2010.
The MNBC has overspent recklessly in almost every category and has exhausted its cash reserves to fund programs, pay for its school, or pay the salary of its political leaders and paid administrators; here are some glaring examples from the financial statements:
1. MNBC has recklessly accumulated an organizational debt of $1,788,932, an addition $1,299,334.00 was added in the 2009‐2010 Finance Statements. Refer to pages 75 and read Note 13 on page 81.
2. MNBC is still responsible to the Royal Bank for a demand loan of $2,167,320.00 and they have deferred payments to June 15th, 201. Refer to Page 80.
3. Métis Education and Employment Trust (according to note 6) has been plundered and continues to be in debt $515,000.00. MNBC has allegedly provided a reserve of $213 670.00 for the possible non‐recovery of this debt. In other words the MNBC Board of Directors has forgiven themselves for the $213 670.00 knowing they will likely never realize the remaining $301,612.00 still owing and yet the statements still list this final amount as a revenues. If not realized, this will be added to the 2010‐2011 financial statements as further debt. Refer to Page 79.
4. During the 2009 MNBC Annual General Meeting (plus several times during this past year) their representatives guaranteed that overall MNBC organizational administration would be significantly reduced. According to the 2009/2010 Financial Report administration has actually increased by 4% (from 16% ‐ 20%) which has resulted in over $300,0000.00 additional administration fees being spent from the previous fiscal year. Refer to Page 83.
5. MNBC legal fees continue to increase totaling over $154,948 again in 2009‐2010 (page 83).
6. MNBC has charged additional administration fees of $2 046 213.00 resulting in an additional deficit in their “projects” budget of $965,762.00. Refer to Page 75.
7. No mention of the current lien filed by the Province of British Columbia as the Provincial Property Tax (PPT) of $106 392.82 that MNBC confessed themselves in a recent correspondence dated September 13th, 2010 that they have been made aware of since February 2010. Why did the auditor not specifically list this legal responsibility in the “notes” section of the Financial Report? Please review the dates the auditor completed this report, August 20th, 2010. Refer to page 66.
8. Plus many other major financial concerns…
It leaves a bitter taste in all of our mouths in what should have been a promising potential for Métis people and our families and particularly our children to advance ahead with other Aboriginal communities prospering in the post 2010 Olympic period.

The Maniotba Metis Federation has announced the creation of an innovative program aimed at tapping into some savings for an ever-growing Metis purchasing base. President David Chartrand announced the creation of a new rewards program based largely on the success of the Air Miles , Safeway, and Shoppers Optimum buyer reward cards. The new cards will be called "Infinity" and many companies have opted in. A large pharmaceutical company and CanadInns have joined forces with the MMF being fully aware of the buying power of the Metis, this reward card program will continue to grow as more company's will see the benefit in reaching out to one of Manitoba's fastest growing demographic.

FYI......Winnipeg region is in fine shape, the office is open and the phones were temporarily disconnected due to a communication error.

MMF Harvester Card Helps Get Fish Back, Apology from the Premier

President David Chartrand of The Manitoba Metis Federaton, told a radio audience last weekend that the MMF harvester cards helped in a case where pickerel was confiscated by conservation officers.
Chartrand related a story where a couple were fishing and had 15 fish confiscated by the officers.
The fishers presented their MMF accepted hunting and fishing membership cards but the officers did not recognize the cards as a viable license. The fishers then reportedly contacted the MMF and Chartrand where the President then went swiftly into action....and action he received !!
After talks with the premiers office, the confiscated catch was actually delivered to the fishers all the way from Grand Rapids, Manitoba. The president of the MMF also stated that the Premier even issued an apology.
With this turn of events, can we safely say that the NDP have made an about face in regards to Metis Hunting Rights ??
...oh yeah, three cheers for the MMF's harvester card program !!

Selinger and the NDP Invest In Metis Business

The Manitoba government is creating a $10 million economic development fund to improve capital for the province’s Métis community.

The announcement was made Saturday in Brandon at the 2010 MMF Annual General Assembly by Premier Greg Selinger and Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) president David Chartrand

“Métis entrepreneurs and businesses have always been major contributors to Manitoba’s economic success,” said Selinger. “This fund is designed to ensure new and growing Métis enterprises have access to the equity they need to continue that success in the 21st century. We look forward to the fund assisting and working with Métis entrepreneurs from across the province who are coming forward to create jobs.”

The Métis Economic Development Fund will stimulate the economic development activities of the Métis people of Manitoba by providing equity and capital for Métis-controlled businesses. The fund will be managed jointly by the Manitoba Government and the MMF and will provide equity investments of up to $500,000. Métis entrepreneurs and existing and new businesses in the Métis community are eligible to apply to the fund. Successful applicants will demonstrate viability through sound business planning. It is anticipated this new fund will be a catalyst for new partnerships and developments.

All revenue generated by the fund will be reinvested back into the fund to grow its supply of capital for investment in other Métis-owned enterprises.

Office location has yet to be decided but we have learned that the Metis Economic Development Organization's (MEDO) board will be made up of the seven Vice Presidents from the Manitoba Metis Federation.

Ek-Elmwood City Council Race Features Two Abs, former Jet and A NDP Pariah

I live in this riding so this contest certainly has piqued my interest.
Four hopefuls are vying for the one council seat and the front runners are clearly established at this point, with the advantage to an Aboriginal candidate.
NDP cast off Rod Geisbrecht, former Winnipeg Jet Thomas Steen, Manitoba Metis Federation local chairperson Nelson Sanderson and daughter of NDP Minister Eric Robinson, Shaneen, all have that political sparkle in their eyes right now, with only one being able to hold bragging rights after October 27th, election day.
While there are two Aboriginal candidates in this race, it appears that Shaneen Robinson has not only distanced herself from the other Ab candidate in terms of momentum and political connections, she also has the early lead according to 10 riding residents.
This area of Winnipeg has seen its demographics change steadily over the past decade with area boasting a higher population of Aboriginal peoples (many Metis in Elmwood-EK) than in previous election years.
As far as my personal voting preference, I have to be leaning towards the Robinson camp. This young lady shows real determination and is certainly not riding on her popular dads' coattails....(although I'm certain Eric is doing all he can to help, he's her dad, nothing wrong with that) She also has attracted endorsements from high profile organizations including the Fireman's union and the New Democratic Party of Manitoba's key support.
Nelson Sanderson is a family member of mine, who has tried his hand at Metis politics previously. As Sanderson is running as an independent with no endorsements or party cash, he wont make much of an impact.
Steen, he's an area outsider who main claim to fame outside of his distinguished hockey career has been as a failed investor who got torched for a lot of money from a failed booze company.
Geisbrecht couldn't see the writing on the wall. When your own party says your not the "guy"......then hey, you're not the guy. I do appreciate that Rod is putting up a hell of a lot of lawn signs but this is NDP territory and I do believe come October, we will see the first Aboriginal lady elected to Winnipeg city council.

MNBC Mismanagement Creates Delinquent Municipal Taxes in First Year of Operation of the Metis School

Coalition of Concerned Metis Citizens of BC continues our research on MNBC purchase of the Metis School in Abbotsford. CCMC has uncovered serious additional challenges that we believe impact our Nation and Metis citizens have the right to know the current new challenges.
CCMC is therefore attaching a CCMC Memorandum and two key research documents. One of the attachments reconfirms the municiple taxes that the Metis School requires MNBC to pay from Metis funding each year over $113 000.00 ($113 568.05 to be exact) each year.
The second attachment was pulled from the land titles office in New Westminster and showcases all charges,liens, and interests as of September 3rd, 2010.
There are several items we have referenced in the CCMC Memorandum about this attachment but the most revealing is that there has already been a lien filed for the taxes owed by MNBC on July 19th, 2010. This lien has not been removed 2 months later and is a serious challenge considering this was filed only 13 months after the Metis School was purchased.
Calls on Metis citizens to review these undeniable facts and realize that CCMC is fighting to protect the long term sustainability for all of us and the MNBC from this obvious poor management. We are confident that MNBC has never been honest or transparent about the lien as another real example of the irresponsible leadership and management.

The Saskatchewan government said Monday it will spend $673,000 to ensure aboriginal and Métis groups can take part in an environmental review of a proposal to build the province's first diamond mine.

Saskatoon-based Shore Gold Inc. wants to develop and operate an open pit diamond mine and processing plant in Crown forest about 60 kilometres east of Prince Albert.

Government officials said the money will allow First Nations and Métis to provide input on how the project would affect their treaty and other rights.

Media Takes Interest In The Bell Of Batoche....again

In recent weeks I have been contacted by a national media organization who have been making queries regarding the Bell Of Batoche. The reporter is doing some good legwork,(he has contacted myself, bloggers, Metis politicos and other closely associated with the Bell's mysterious disappearance. but I do feel his attempts will too fall on deaf ears.....let there be no doubt ; a familial conspiracy is at play here MN & S has also taken interest over the past few years and occasionally I run or write a piece that involves the legendary, almost mythical, Bell. I have had NO verifiable indication from any sources as to the whereabouts of the Bell as of today. Here's a little background ;

The Bell was stolen from the Canadian Legion in 1991 after a visit from Manitobans', and supposed proud Metis' Yvon Dumont and Billy Joe Delaronde. The two were former Manitoba Metis Federation Presidents who have now been shunned for various reasons by the voters in the Metis community and will never again hold political office in our nation. Billy Jo Delaronde was or is a First Nations Chief !!
My personal involvement includes contact with Metis members who have witnessed or know of the Bells' whereabouts.
The most important piece that I can share is a story told by my uncle Nelson Sanderson who is currently running for city council here in Winnipeg, Nelson Sanderson .
Sanderson related a visit he had to the residence of Delaronde where the former MMF Head took him down the basement and pulled a cover off of what turned out to be the Bell !!
When the story runs later this month, there will be renewed interest in returning the Bell back to the Metis people. As well there should.
But until the dya when a true Metis who knows or has seen the Bell decides to speak up, we can only imagine what the Bell looks like...I can't even find a picture of the Bell on the web !!

MMF President's Monthly Update

This summer has truly been a season to celebrate with all of the numerous cultural events throughout Manitoba and the Homeland to honour the Year of the Metis Nation.
Despite this being a time for many of us to enjoy outdoors with our families, there continues to be much activity within your Metis Government including recent announcements that directly relate to the health of our people.
The recent joint announcement with Canada and Manitoba to train more Metis people to receive training in the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program is a positive sign that will not only assist Metis families with employment but will also give back to our communities through the delivery of culturally appropriate services. Earlier this summer, the joint study between the University of Manitoba and MMF pointed towards the dire situation we find ourselves in regarding the overall health of our people. Alarming figures for diabetes, arthritis, teen pregnancy and many more health issues were presented for the first time. We have always known that the health status of our people lagged behind the rest of the Manitoba population but now we know without a doubt, as these study numbers are irrefutable.
Though Metis Citizens pay taxes and should be eligible to receive equitable services, it appears that our people are once again falling through the cracks of the safety net. I assure you that the MMF is demanding to meet with federal and provincial ministers to address this situation before our parents, grandparents and children become numbers on a statistical data sheet. It is not tolerable in the year 2010 that our Elders with diabetes are more prone to losing a limb or that our young people are more likely to see suicide as an option.
We have traveled a long and hard journey as a people and it appears that we must continue the fight for our true and historic place in this country we helped to found. I urge you to join with us at our assembly in September in Brandon and tell the federal and provincial governments that the Metis Nation deserves much more respect than has been given to us in the past. In issues of health care, justice, economic development, education and training, to name a few, we are many strides from where we were a few short years ago, but we must continue the battle to ensure that our Elders, young people and families enjoy the same opportunities that are available to all Canadians.
I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our assembly and know that, once again, Manitoba will showcase to the country the most dynamic and impressive Metis assembly anywhere. To our Elders and our Veterans, I say thank you for the work and sacrifices you have made to get us to where we are. To our young people and children, I hope you respect the choices made by those who have come before. And to our families, I thank you for never doubting that the Metis Nation would grow strong once again.

Metis MP Movin' On Up !!

MANITOBA MP Shelly Glover is moving over to become the parliamentary secretary for Indian Affairs.

The Prime Minister's Office announced the change Sunday for the first-term Conservative MP, who is Métis. She replaces John Duncan, who a few weeks ago was elevated to become the minister of Indian Affairs in a minor cabinet shuffle.

Glover has been the parliamentary secretary for official languages since 2008.

She represents Saint Boniface and was elected for the first time in October 2008.

Dear Mr. Zivot,

I write today as a concerned and very disappointed Manitoba Métis woman who is unable to vote in the upcoming Manitoba Métis Federation 2010 Election. My role as a Member of Parliament and as Parliamentary Secretary for Official Languages requires that I be in Ottawa from Monday to Friday. This does not allow me to vote in either advanced polls (held on a Tuesday and Wednesday) or on election day (Thursday, June 10, 2010).

I know there are other Métis members who are also affected by work schedules that prevent them from voting during the week. I also know all too well the importance of an election and the significance one vote can make. Therefore I propose either extended advanced polls which include a weekend option or election days on a weekend in order to ensure that all voters have adequate opportunity to show support. Given the typically low voter turnout, I am thoroughly disappointed that more has not been done to make voter participation a priority.

Dear Derryl: I just wanted to thank you so much for your Metis blog. There are more and more websites about Metis culture and history, but I appreciate a dynamic site like yours that continues to cover Metis subjects. I am not Metis myself, but I feel very close to the culture. I grew up in St. Vincent, MN, which is on the Manitoba border on the Red River of the North, across from Pembina, ND, which is like almost ground zero for the culture. Many classmates and neighbors in our villages were Metis. Metis were married into my family. No one used that term when I grew up because the Metis were heavily integrated into our communities. We never even thought about our friends' culture when kids, we were just kids together. I have only come to learn the rich diversity and history as an adult in recent years as I have expanded on a long held love of local history and family history I began as a child. A century-old sword used by a founder of Manitoba has gone missing and is believed stolen from a festival celebrating Métis heritage.

Louis Riel's Toledo steel sword was taken on Saturday from a pavilion at Saskatchewan's Back To Batoche festival.

The festival is celebrating 125 years of Métis culture and history.

Henry Hall, who collects, preserves and tours Canada with Riel's artifacts, said the priceless sword was on display before it vanished. It was one of many Riel artifacts Hall had on display at the festival.

Hall, who spoke to CBC News about the incident while vacationing in Petersfield, Man., said he left the sword in trustworthy hands.

"The artifacts were in good hands, in people's hands that I trust thoroughly," said Hall. "I guess evidently the pavilion was really, really full. [The sword was] out so people could look at it [and] see Riel is not a myth."

Hall said the historic weapon is about three feet long, has a brass handle and the initials L.R. stamped into it.

"It's priceless," Hall said. He added that although there are probably other Toledo steel swords like it, what gives this one its value is "the fact that it was stamped with Riel's initials and that it was Riel's sword."

Hall said the RCMP have been called in to investigate.

Riel was an MP and leader of the Métis people, and is considered a founder of the province of Manitoba.

He was hanged for treason in 1885 at the age of 41 after leading Métis resistance in Saskatchewan against the Canadian government.

Batoche is about 90 kilometres north east of Saskatoon.

A missing sword, believed to belong to the famous Metis leader Louis Reil, has been found.
The sword disappeared Wednesday during the annual Back to Batoche festival in Saskatchewan.
It had been on disply at a table hosted by the Metis Nation of British Columbia.
Robert Doucette of The Metis Nation of Saskatchewan said the sword was recovered Sunday by a security company working at the festival.
He says the artifact was turned in by a mman from the nearby One Arrow first nation - CTV news

Effectus Athlete Development has always been dedicated to improving the lives of others with the power of sport, exercise, friendship and top-notch knowledge. We strive to provide the best possible training, biomechanics & nutrition services for Manitoba's and Canada's best athletes, all the while still taking time to take care of the everyday person looking to improve their overall wellness.

Our passion for helping people has brought us to a point where we would like do something more for the people we care about. Two employees working at Effectus Athlete Development, including the part owner, are of aboriginal descent (Metis) and would like to give back to their community. More specifically we would like to provide assistance and awareness to the Metis youth of Winnipeg. Continuing to provide amazing experiences for our youth is an investment that lasts a lifetime and we need the help of others to make this event as succe

ssful as it can be. For this reason we are planning to hold a fundraiser on the 7^th of August, 2010 in conjunction with the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF). The Effectus Road to Gold Fundraiser will be held at the Wildewood club on 761 North Drive - in the back yard (Cabbage Patch) and surrounding area.

The MMF have initiated a youth program called "Road to Gold" that aims at creating opportunities for Metis youth to be active, learn new or improve existing sport skills, and develop their social skills. They provide experienced coaches as well as equipment for the youth to experience sport and recreation the way it is supposed to be experienced. This program's efforts will provide opportunities to youth that would not exist otherwise, and many children have already gained some valuable experience in the sport world because of it. Examples of such experiences are a golf camp, MMA (mixed martial arts) camp and a hockey camp all in the same year.

The Road to Gold program can always use more support and we intend on helping them as much as possible. The one day fundraiser will include outdoor fitness classes, a fris-knock tournament, tire-flip competition, a running group, and a barbeque with a silent auction. All events will have a select fee associated with them and all proceeds from this event will go towards Road to Gold. A schedule of events is listed below with links to the sign up forms.

I can't take holidays and I have a wedding to perform at this weekend, so I am so disappointed that I can't make it for the 125th anniversary of the Battle Of Batoche.
There will be heaps of traditional and contemporary Metis musicians, workshops, ceremonies and the camaraderie of thousands taking part in what should be the Metis event of the year.....during this, the "Year Of The Metis

British General Middleton was very cautious after his defeat by Metis troops at the Battle of Fish Creek (in what is now Saskatchewan). Middleton stopped all military action for two weeks in order to rest his men. The final major battle of the Northwest Rebellion took place from May 9th to 12th, 1885 at Batoche.

The Métis forces had dug in and trenches stretched around the perimeter of Batoche. General Middleton decided to attack the town of Batoche from two sides at the same time. He planned to have a boat sent down the river to Batoche where it would attack from the west. Meanwhile, Middleton would lead his soldiers in an attack from the east. The steamer "Northcote" was prepared for battle by changing it into a gunboat. To provide protection from the Métis gunfire, the army used boards from Dumont's house and barn, part of Dumont's pool table and some food sacks. Dumont's house was then looted and burned. Thirty-five soldiers took up positions on th the gunboat, and it started down the river towards Batoche.

As the gunboat reached Batoche, many of the Métis and Indians left their rifle pits and ran to the riverbank. There was an exchange of fire. As the boat passed Batoche, the Métis lowered a ferry cable they had strung across the river causing the smokestacks, spars, and steam whistle to be knocked over. The gunboat drifted out of control, on down the river. It did not return. This was Canada's first and only inland Naval war in her history.

Middleton and his soldiers marched towards Batoche. They arrived an hour late, so the gunboat had already passed and the Métis and Indians were back in their rifle pits. Middleton had field guns and fired at the village of Batoche. The women and children fled in terror. Middleton began to attack with his soldiers. But the Métis men were fairly safe in their rifle pits which had been carefully hidden in the bushes. Once again, Middleton's soldiers fought from higher ground where they were easy targets. At the end of the first day of fighting, Middleton believed he was losing.

The next morning, Middleton decided to delay a major attack. His men needed a rest, and he hoped that the Métis defense would weaken with time. For the next two days, Middleton made use of his field guns and the gatling gun, but he avoided a major attack. The Métis continued to use up their ammunition.

By the morning of the fourth day, some of the Métis had realized that the battle was hopeless, so they left. Many of the Métis that remained were old men. They were running out of bullets. Some were firing stones from their shotguns. As the armies fought in the distance, a group of Métis in the town asked Riel to work a miracle. Middleton's army became over anxious and while Middleton was indisposed, they began a frontal attack. The attack was poorly organized and allowed many of the Métis to escape to the safety of the bushes. Riel and Dumont fled as well.

For three days the Métis defenders battled innumerable odds and superior weaponry. With ammunition running out, the defenders had to resort to using nails and other metal fragments in place of bullets. Badly outnumbered, the Métis were driven from their trenches and forced to surrender on May 12, the fourth day of the battle.

With the May 12 defeat of the Métis, Batoche was lost, families were scattered and the people lived in fear for themselves or their relatives who might be wounded and prosecuted(as had occurred 15 years earlier when the Red River Resistance came to its conclusion). Suddenly Batoche, the last great vestige of Métis dominion and the old way of life on the Western Plains caved in to military control.

One by one, women and men began to turn themselves in to General Middleton's forces. In the process their weapons were confiscated despite protests that it would leave them without a means to hunt for food. As in past battles "To the victor go the spoils". Batoche was no exception. With the disappearance or imprisonment of the Métis; their cabins, farmlands, and possessions were ripe for the taking. Neither Middleton or the clergy were above reproach as they too participated in the looting.

The impact and influence of the clergy in the community quickly vanished. During the battle the priests had attempted to talk the Métis out of fighting for what they believed in were their rights. When the Métis would not do what the Clergy wanted, the clergy acted as informants and passed on vital information gathered by the English Métis (in particular Charles Nolin) to the military. The priests also tried to blackmail the people by refusing to administer the sacraments (holy communion) to those taking up arms and following Riel. Accidentally, they denounced Riel as a heretic and when it came time to give up, they too collected Métis weapons as if they themselves were the military. With little faith left in the community for the church, members of the clergy such as Fathers Fourmond and Vegreville were finished. The parish at St. Louis was abandoned, and Fourmond hightailed it to Prince Albert.

The ones who truly suffered, though, were the Métis. The human misery and suffering created by the conflicts along the valley of the South Saskatchewan was staggering. Families lost track fo their children. Many women, left behind when their men went to support Riel and Dumont, were without food, shelter or adequate clothing. They dared not return to their homes as those were being ransacked by soldiers; who, they thought, might imprison them as well as their men folk. Many had fled to the security of the woods and the caves that the women of the Métis Nation created a flag (the original Métis flag) in support of the battle.

One of the families Dumont assisted was Louis Riel's. Nobody knew where Riel was. For three days Dumont looked high and low for Riel. Finally thinking that Riel may have already turned himself in, Dumont took Riel's wife, Marguerite, and her two children to his father's home, Isidore Dumont. Isidore advised Gabriel to abandon his fight, to cease his hunt for Riel and to strike out for Montana where it was safe. He had no choice. Leaving behind his wife, Dumont bid farewell to his family and rode south with Michael Dumas. About a year after reaching the safety of the United States, Dumont joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. After that, thousands of people paid to see Dumont demonstrate his riding and shooting talents. In 1886, the Canadian Government declared a general amnesty. Eight years after the fighting, Dumont returned home where he spent his remaining years hunting and farming. Gabriel Dumont died in Saskatchewan on May 19, 1906.

The two leaders reacted differently to this defeat. Both were hidden in the woods and ravines around Batoche. Riel withdrew into the woods to pray. He made no attempt to flee. When Middleton demanded that he surrender, he replied that he would give himself up to fulfill God's will and that he wanted freedom for all his council and his people. He would surrender so that he could continue to defend the Métis cause. Riel's destiny was to be played out in a trial in Regina.

The resistance was nearly over. Poundmaker surrendered on May 23, but Big Bear was still at large. He was attempting to restore the military unity of Metis and First Nations which had existed on the plains. By the time that Big Bear's people reached Loon Lake, some camped there while others, including their prisoners went on. Shortly after this Colonel Strange's soldiers caught up with them and attacked the camp. Five Cree warriors were killed. This was the last of the fighting in the Northwest Rebellion. With his forces dying of hunger and no more ammunition left, Big Bear finally gave himself up on July 2. Louis David Riel was executed by the Government of Canada in Regina on November 16, 1885.

The execution of Riel and other Métis and Indian participants continues to be controversial in modern day Canada. It has entrenched negative attitudes toward not only Métis people, but all of Canada's Aboriginal people. As well it further exacerbated the widening rift between English and French Canadians.
Interesting to note the "brave" Canadian army contingent buried 51 Metis in a mass grave.

Winnipeg Free Press ; The Metis Land Claims Are Fatally Weak

Here is an editorial that was published in Manitoba's largest newspaper, The Winnipeg Free Press.
The paper feels we should stop flogging a dead horse and give up on the Metis land claims ;

Despite the learned opinion of two successive higher courts now, the Manitoba Metis Federation is hanging tough in its legal claim that it is owed a lot of money to settle a land dispute dating back to the founding of Manitoba. MMF members might ask if they are getting the best value from the leadership, which intends to take the case now to the Supreme Court of Canada.

On Wednesday, the Manitoba Court of Appeal substantially upheld the 2007 decision of Queen's Bench Justice Alan MacInnes, who tossed out the MMF's claim that the federal government breached its fiduciary duty in distributing the 1.4 million acres granted to the children of the original Métis settlers as the Red River Settlement became a province. While the appeal court found there was a fiduciary relationship between the Métis and the Crown, the government did not breach its duty by ineptitude, intent or fraud. While there were extraordinary and inexplicable delays to the distribution of the land -- at a time when newcomers flooded into the land that encompassed modern-day Winnipeg -- the government's decision to hold a lottery was reasonable and fair. Moreover, both courts have said the suit was filed too late.

Appeal court rejects Métis land claim

The MMF claimed the government should have held the 1.4 million acres in trust until the children were adults, and that the distribution ought to have been managed to build a land base for the families and the Métis nation. The MMF claimed Ottawa breached its duty by parcelling out lots individually, and allowing the sale of lots in advance of or after the distribution.

Two courts now have found that Ottawa had no obligation to hold the land in trust, noting there is no evidence that the Métis lived communally. All of the 1.4 million acres were distributed to Métis children. While speculators bought land from some Métis families in advance of and after the lottery, documentary evidence shows this was in accordance with the wishes of the Métis themselves.

Having been told twice now that its case is fatally weak, the MMF continues to insist the Métis nation has been swindled out of its historical claim to a homeland, which it believes ought to be compensated for financially. But without a treaty, without documentary evidence behind them, the pursuit is increasingly looking like a futile bid for cash. This is underscored by the fact that both courts -- the appeal court panel was comprised of five justices -- have determined the federation has no standing in the claim because neither it nor the named appellants had ancestral links to the Métis settlers prior to 1870.

In recent history, the MMF and the Métis people have expanded or solidified their aboriginal rights and administration over programs touching upon their cultural interests. In this way, the MMF has served a useful role for the people recognized widely as pivotal to the settling of vast tracts of Canada.

Here's the rebuttal argument from Manitoba Metis Federation President, David Chartrand ;

President Chartrand responds to Winnipeg Free Press editorial I am writing in response to your editorial “Metis Claim Futile” (June 7, 2010). The editor of the Winnipeg Free Press questions the wisdom of the Manitoba Metis Federation decision to appeal a ruling on land claims and suggests that the MMF membership tell its leaders to quit. The Manitoba Court of Appeal indicated in its ruling that the issues raised in this case are “unique and important”. It is the ultimate function of the Supreme Court of Canada to decide unique and important issues and rule on cases of national importance.

The editor has characterized the decision to pursue the case as “futile”. While he may have special insight relating to the eventual outcome, we prefer to wait until the case has been heard. Actually, the way to diminish the progress of the Metis would be to accept his advice and abandon our claim before the Supreme Court has an opportunity to correct this historical injustice.

The Manitoba Court of Appeal granted a motion in 1988 from the federal government stating that the case should not even proceed to trial. Had we followed the approach advocated by the Free Press, the case would have ended there and then. Instead, we petitioned the Supreme Court of Canada which in 1990 unanimously overturned the Manitoba Court of Appeal and therefore allowed us to proceed to trial.

The editor and I met several years ago and at that time he openly questioned the existence of the Metis Nation despite a decision from the Supreme Court ruling in favour of Metis Harvesting rights (Powley v Canada) and recognition in section 35 (affirming Metis as a distinct Aboriginal People) of the Canadian Constitution.

Regarding the point raised questioning the level of support for this historic case, the MMF held a province wide leadership election last month to which the Free Press provided minimal coverage. If he had referred to any of the scant mentions he would have quickly realized that there is in fact overwhelming support for our current mandate, including the pursuit of this case.

The editorial also stated that the “relentless hunt for financial compensation for a collective homeland that never existed can only distract and diminish the progress of the Metis.” On behalf of the Metis people of Manitoba, I can state with full confidence that there was and still is a Metis Homeland and to suggest otherwise is just plain wrong.

Our History is filled with many episodes of tyranny that include abuse, threats and ignoring of rights yet we persevere as a people. We remember our past while we look to the future in our continuing struggle for equality as a proud Metis Nation. This case is not a “futile bid for cash” as the editorial suggests but an attempt to correct the “Manitoba story” and honour the memory of our people and the sacrifices they made to establish this Province and Western Confederation. We only seek that same standard of honour to be met by the Crown in the promises made to our children and to right the wrongs committed over a hundred years ago. We will never quit.

MMF Management Fees In Jeopardy....Possible $ 7,000,000 Loss !!

The President of The Manitoba Métis Federation told a surprised Metis Hour X 2 audience , the government has told the Metis advocate agency, they can no longer continue charging 15% for services they deliver to their membership. Items such as charging rent for headquarters has been brought under scrutiny. The President indicated the government feels there is a conflict with the current renting of MMF private office space to these agencies. If what the President says holds true, services such as Metis Child and Family, HRDT, PRI and a host of other could be affected by the government's bold, but not unexpected move. Lets' speculate the the Community Housing Managers of Manitoba receive in excess of $ 2,000,000 per year....if the MMF loses its' 15% cut, that amounts to at least $ 300,000 out of head office's capacity pool....doesn't take Einstein to know that cuts might be in order. President Chartrand stated a possible $ 7,000,000 could be lost from the MMF's coffers !! How many MMF employees at 150 Henry could be affected ?? What services could be cut ? Or more interestingly....could this open the door to regions such as Winnipeg Metis Association Inc. , to finally enable more dollars to flow into Manitoba's most highly populated Metis region. The government is even saying the MMF should not be able to dole out cash to the regions as they are a third party of an agreement....more bad news for MMF head office and its' funding base.

I love these affordable housing announcements, but the Metis here in Winnipeg are still awaiting any announcement regarding a Metis specific affordable housing plan.....what gives ??

On National Aboriginal Day, the municipal, provincial and federal governments announced $7.5 million of joint funding for housing initiatives for aboriginal people in Winnipeg.

Manitoba Minister of Housing and Community Development Kerri Irvin-Ross, M.P. Rod Bruinooge (Winnipeg South), and City Councillor Mike Pagtakhan (Point Douglas) made the announcement on Monday morning.

"Building affordable housing breathes new life into neighbourhoods by strengthening communities and providing a foundation for families," said Irvin-Ross.

Bruinooge said that the investment will help organizations support people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

The housing projects require both financial support and support from the community, said Pagtakhan.

Kekinan Housing will receive $4.2 million used to build a 30-unit, three storey housing complex for aboriginal seniors.
The Centre for Aboriginal Human Development will use $2.3 million for a 15-unit townhouse complex that will provide affordable housing for low income aboriginal families.
About $500,000 will be used for down payment assistance and mortgage subsidies for seven low-to-moderate income first-time aboriginal home buyers.
Winnipeg Habitat for Humanity will use $500,000 to help the Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council building five homes.

On top of the $7.5 million in joint funding, Irvin-Ross also announced Monday that the province is spending $3.13 million on two housing initiatives for aboriginal people in Brandon that will be administered by the Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council Housing Authority. CTV.ca - 5 days ago

Alberta Hunting Rights Decision Expected In Fall

A marathon Metis hunting trial has drawn to a close after 45 days of trial over 14 months, but Albertans will have to wait until the fall to hear what is predicted to be a landmark decision.

Alberta Metis say that rather than litigate hectare by hectare for rights to hunt in the province, they have gambled with an unprecedented argument for recognition of their right to hunt anywhere in central and southern Alberta.

"It's go big or go home in Alberta," said Metis Nation of Alberta lawyer Jason Madden. "That's been our motto in this case. Let's put it all on the table. Was there a Metis people on the plains? We think the evidence shows that."

Madden said he and colleague Jean Teillet have won cases in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario that have recognized piecemeal Metis rights in specific areas, but they are seeking to break new ground in Alberta.

"Either Metis were on the plains with the Blackfoot, Sioux and Assiniboine and they have harvesting rights or they don't," he said.

The lawyer for the Metis have said this case is different from the Supreme Court of Canada Powley case, which they won in 2003 and set the ball rolling on Metis rights, because it involves a highly-mobile people who chased the buffalo across the plains and were not confined to one locale.

The province has argued that since there was no Metis settlement in central or southern Alberta -- and the Supreme Court has ruled the rights of Metis are site specific -- the facts say there should be no wholesale right for Metis to hunt, fish and trap in southern Alberta.

Alberta Crown lawyer Thomas Rothwell said it is a significant case. "It's the first time the courts in Alberta will have the opportunity to apply the Powley test and provide direction on Metis hunting in Alberta," he said. "I can't speculate on what it will live or die on, but certainly the presence or absence of Metis in southern Alberta is a key issue."

The Crown has said the Metis, fur traders, missionaries and Cree largely stayed out of central and southern Alberta, until after the arrival of the North West Mounted Police, because the Blackfoot Confederacy fiercely defended its territory.

One expert told the trial judge that on one occasion 60 Cree, who visited the Cypress Hills to gather resin, were all killed and scalped by the Blackfoot.

Rothwell said the Blackfoot had many skirmishes with the Cree along the Battle River that runs through what is now Ponoka.

"It was not called the Battle River for nothing," he said.

Audrey Poitras, president of the 42,000-member Metis Association of Alberta, said she is confident the Metis will win the case.

"We maybe won't get everything we deserve, but I do believe we will win and be able to move forward," she said. "Hopefully the government of Alberta will accept it as a win and get back to an agreement that allows our people to exercise the rights they continue to believe they have, but are hesitant to exercise because or being charged and being viewed as criminals."

Alberta negotiated an agreement with Metis following the Powley case, but rescinded it in 2007 as a result of opposition from other hunters, conservationists and First Nations. It replaced the agreement that recognized Metis rights to hunt anywhere in the province with a policy that restricts them to 160-kilometre areas around specific northern Alberta communities.

The Metis forced the issue into court by staging community hunts around the province.

The Medicine Hat case stems from charges that were laid against Edmonton-area resident Ron Jones for shooting an antelope near Suffield and Medicine Hat resident Gary Hirsekorn for shooting a mule deer in the Cypress Hills.

Provincial Court Judge Ted Fisher said he expects to deliver his ruling in late October.

It's widely known that the health of aboriginal populations in Canada lags behind that of other Canadians. In 2002, the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy (MCHP) published a report titled The Health and Health Care Use of Registered First Nations People Living in Manitoba: A Population-Based Study. The research project demonstrated that Registered First Nations people have shorter life expectancy and higher morbidity than other Manitobans, however, little has been published on the health of Aboriginals who do not have Status, such as Metis. This collaborative study between Manitoba Health, MCHP and the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) examines the health of the Metis population of Manitoba with indicators such as physical illness, hospital services, educational success, and the use of social services. There are some good findings and some that are troubling.

This was probably the most heated contest as Team Fleming utilized the "old school Metis political ways" and attacked Chartrand professionally, personally yet offered no clear vision to lead Winnipeg MMF members.
Former Manitoba Metis Federation President and lieutenant Governor Yvon Dumont threw his political support behind Fleming late in the campaign in an ill advised attempt to save the sinking ship Fleming. The endorsement from the Metis politically battle worn Dumont, proved no match for the proven leadership and grassroots support that Chartrand possessed. Indeed, Dumont has taken flack from friends and family for his highly questionable decision to endorse Team Fleming as has his political intellect.
Yvon is a good man ; just not a very savvy politician.
I trust Ron will take steps to help motivate thousand more Metis to get involved over the next four years of his mandate and continue the good work he has accomplished in the housing area.
A long overdue, but heartfelt congrats Ron.

Métis to Hold Press Conference and Community Feast

Medicine Hat, AB (June 18, 2010) – Alberta’s first Métis harvesting rights trial is set to conclude next week in Medicine Hat.

The historic trial began in May 2009. Over the last year, the Alberta Provincial Court has heard 42 days of testimony from 35 witnesses. These witnesses have included 6 experts with knowledge in areas such as the history of western Canada and Aboriginal peoples, the fur trade, Métis geography, the Métis scrip process, genealogy and Métis mobility. As well, 30 Métis community witnesses, including, Elders, men, women and youth, from locations across the Alberta and the Métis Nation testified about Metis identity, culture, way of life and the importance of harvesting to Alberta Métis.

Métis Nation of Alberta President Audrey Poitras, along with other Métis citizens and leaders from across the province and the Métis Nation, will be travelling to Medicine Hat for June 22nd and 23rd in order to offer their support and hear the closing arguments of Métis rights lawyers – Jean Teillet and Jason Madden.

Backgrounder on Trial

This trial (R. v. Jones and Hirsekorn) is the result of the current Alberta Government’s cancellation of the Interim Métis Harvesting Agreement (IMHA) in July 2007.

In September 2004, the previous Klein Government executed the IMHA with the Métis Nation of Alberta in order to implement the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in R. v. Powley in Alberta. The IMHA remained in place for over 2 ½ years until Ted Morton, then Minister for Sustainable Resource Development, cancelled the IMHA and implemented a unilateral and regressive policy that denies Métis harvesting rights in much of central Alberta and all of southern Alberta.

In August 2007, Alberta Métis rejected Ted Morton’s policy and unanimously passed their own Métis harvesting rights action plan and harvesting policy. Métis community hunts were organized and held across Alberta in the Fall of 2007. The current trial involves two Métis harvesters who participated in those community hunts (Ron Jones and Garry Hirsekorn) in southeastern Alberta.

This trial in southeastern Alberta is to act as a "test case" for the entire province, since there are over 25 other Métis harvesters charged across the province and Métis continue to reject Alberta’s current harvesting policy. The issues raised in the case will determine whether Alberta’s current policy and interpretation of the Powley case is correct.

In this case, the defendants are arguing they are members of a historic rights-bearing Métis community called the Métis of the Northwest and that they are members of a modern day Métis community that spans southern and central Alberta and extends into northern Alberta and other parts of the modern day Métis Nation. They assert their community possesses food harvesting rights that are protected by s. 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982.

President Doucette Denounces Critics

Metis Nation-Saskatchewan (MNS) President Robert Doucette told reporters Monday it’s been “a banner year” for the organization, and rejected calls by a majority of Metis area directors for his resignation.

“I’m proud of the many accomplishments, and this nation is only getting started,” Doucette said during a news conference at the MNS offices on Jessop Avenue in Saskatoon.

Last week, nine of the 16 area directors for the MNS called for the resignation of Doucette and vice-president Allan Morin. They said the pair wasn’t being accountable and hadn’t held enough meetings to discuss various issues.

Doucette said there have been regular meetings with frequent updates from the executive. He said the MNS is in its best position in years, and said the disgruntled directors may be angry because they didn’t get the plum portfolio assignments.

But area director Helene Johnson, one of those who called for the resignations, said Doucette and his small inner circle have not revealed key information about MNS finances.

“I want to know what’s going on. I want the books opened,” said Johnson, who also attended the news conference.

“I don’t know how that money’s being spent.”

Metis Nation council call for leaders' resignation
A majority of the council of the Metis Nation-Saskatchewan (MNS) is calling for the immediate resignations of the organization's president and vice-president.

The council alleges president Robert Doucette and vice-president Allan Morin have contravened the MNS constitution by making decisions without consulting elected representatives. One council member, however, said Doucette has been extremely open and democratic and called these allegations absurd.

Doucette and Morin "have been unilaterally making decisions without consultation to the provincial Metis council" for the past 18 months, says a news release issued Wednesday and signed by nine council members.

The Metis council is an 18-person body made up of 12 regionally elected members, four provincially elected members, a women's representative and a youth representative. It currently has two vacant seats.

Doucette noted there have been 11 board meetings in the past year and a half, all of which included exhaustive reports from the executive.

Doucette plans to host a news conference Monday to discuss the allegations.

Winnipeg region memebrs know that you just elected a lady known as the "signer" and a man who took a quick and by every account, unearned $ 5,000 cheque just before losing another election years ago. Two perfect yes people.

...our voting total were embarrassing. I told another candidate that if the voting numbers fell below 5,000, we should ALL(Including President Chartrand) consider it a defeat of sorts.
People are now more than ever, feeling a stronger disconnect to the MMF. In 4 years we added 10, 000 members, yet our voting totals are down almost a staggering 2,400 !!!
Its' now up to the new board to get the people motivated.

After a whirlwind three week campaign, tomorrow we will see if the support that has been indicated through phone calls, personal visits, event visits and a rally, will enable us enough supporters to be elected to political office !! The campaign we have chosen was to be clean in nature, no trash talk ; merely attempting to show a vision for positive people-focused change and to continue the fine legacy of previous Manitoba Metis Federation administrations. Tonight we must continue to talk Metis politics and get excited about the fact we DO have a democratic process. Continue to talk the ear off of your friend, co-worker or family member right up until you get to the polls !! Our team has succeeded in producing a positive energy campaign and we have enjoyed talking to Metis in Winnipeg at the various functions I have attended. I urge all....for a true and honest voice for the Metis in Winnipeg, elect Derryl Sanderson, BOD, Winnipeg region of the Manitoba Metis Federation !! Thanks to all of our grassroots Metis supporters, business community supporters and another huge thanks to Ron and David Chartrand who didn't openly endorse me as I had asked, (Ron did sign my nomination sheet) for your advice and support.....rain, wind or hail....get out to vote, this year everyone will make a difference !!!

MMF Electoral Reform...the Positive Future

I recently had a chat with President Chartrand on the topic of electoral reform. We agreed that next election, much has to be done in order to create an election complete with high quality candidate and that will help enable increased poll participation from the membership. Sadly, many feel this election was rushed....not enough time given for prospective nominees, inadequate voting lists as many listed were deceased, or on the list two times. The most damning of all comments comes from Member of Parliament, and fellow Metis , Shelley Glover ;

APTN NATIONAL NEWS MMF CANDIDATES “DEBATE”
TIME AND DATE: Wednesday 9 June 2010 at 12:00 noon.
SETTING: In the courtyard shared by APTN and Air Canada at 339 Portage Avenue. The set will be near the front doors of APTN.
LAYOUT: The anchor will sit facing the two candidates who will each be in a chair seated next to one another. The camera will cut between the anchor and the candidate speaking. Occasionally, the shot will show both candidates seated next to one another.
BROADCAST DETAILS: The discussion/debate will be pre-taped “live-to-air”. This means that although the item is pre-taped, it will air unedited on APTN National News. The broadcast date will be 9 June 2010 (that is, the evening of the recording date) and take up the back-half of the usual hour-long show. This will allow approximately 22 minutes of air time (30 minutes minus commercials).
TECHNICAL: Each guest will have an in-ear microphone so they can clearly hear the other candidate and the anchor. Speakers nearby will broadcast to onlookers.
FORMAT: -Event begins with a welcome by the anchor. -Each candidate is introduced using a “board” with a head-and-shoulders photograph of the candidate and several relevant details. I was thinking NAME, AGE, OCCUPATION, EDUCATION, FAMILY.
-Each candidate gets to make a 3 minute opening statement.
-The anchor then turns to questions submitted by viewers. These questions will be pre-chosen by APTN’s editorial staff.
On Tuesday evening I’ll email out the general subject areas (although not the questions themselves). These may be interspersed with questions from the anchor (written by APTN news staff). The candidates will each be given 2 minutes to answer the question. -Each candidate will be given 2 minutes to give a closing statement. -The anchor will thank the candidates, the viewers, and the audience. -Sign off.

Election Forum Cancelled By MMF

Notice to all !!
The election forum that was scheduled for tomorrow night at the Freighthouse has been inexplicably cancelled. In phone conversations with Gary Hamilton of Grassroots News and Shannon from the Manitoba Metis Federation, no reason was given for the cancellation. Hamilton indicated Grassroots merely rented the ad space to the Federation.
This forum was a vital tool for my platform and campaign. The Freighthouse Forum is known traditionally as the most well attended function for MMF members to hear the platforms and vision of the various candidates. Sadly, with no more debates scheduled, the will be little info available to MMF members.
A sad day for Metis democracy, a good day for Chartrand endorsed BOD candidates.

My Campaign Trail So Far....Looking Good !!!

The Manitoba Metis Federation election day is now less than two weeks away and from what many associated with my campaign feel, we are beginning to gain a little more steam.
The campaign has been bolstered by some high level support from some likely, and unlikely supporters. The days have been quite long, but we all trust that our teams approach to fairness during this election seems to be winning us support. No trash talk, just policy and politics.
While I have noticed the action heating up on other fronts, the Winnipeg region board of director race appears to be quite tame, but exciting. Other than BOD candidate Andrew Carrier's decision to utilize his local's letterhead, the election has been great. Now, in using the letterhead without his local's complete approval, Carrier shows a certain lack of respect for democracy and the members.
Our team held a fundraiser/rally yesterday at The Westbrook Inn and it is so heartwarming as to how much this business has gone to support my candidacy. The club is known as "The Home of Aboriginal Music" , so their endorsement is large. The fundraiser featured some of Manitoba, if not Canada's finest Metis artists. Clint Dutiaume, # 1 artist Chris Beach and Diana Desjardins, were just a few of the artists who have helped the campaign gain momentum. In attendance at the well attended event were President David Chartrand and his manager Will Goodon, Winnipeg region VP Ron Chartrand, whose aid has been instrumental thus far, his manager Gerry Buors and of course one my staunchest supporters Randy Delaronde. A huge thanks to all who attended and have helped the campaign grow !!
The fundraiser has enabled me to purchase a banner and 125 posters which will be handed out starting tomorrow !! Gas for election day is a lock, now we just need $ 375.00 for radio ad time....any one wishing to help the team out, e mail me. The airtime would be octane boost for the campaign

thinks we allegedly forgot about him. Although it still won't cost him the election, it reminds me of his endorsement for the Liberal Party of Canada, a losing endorsement at that. But Dave, please explain to me your thoughts on Andrew Carriere's alleged BONUS he received just days before losing the BOD position. And while your at it, explain Claire Riddle's alleged similar bonus. Heck, I'm sure even Ed Ducharmelol..nice wording there/

Ron cleaned that place up and has continually moved forward, progressing while fighting all the backstabbing

As for endorsing Mr. Chartrand for President, if I'm correct, the case behind that, was the FACT that no body can beat him at this point in history....all the power to Godon for trying, but up until this point in the Election, in my opinion, Dave has made few mistakes...and honestly..he's a great guy to talk to..lol...

Batoche Celebration Expanded

2010 is a year of commemoration, celebration, reconciliation and honour for the Metis Nation.

It's the Year of the Metis, and also the 125th anniversary of the Northwest Resistance.

President of Metis Nation - Saskatchewan, Robert Doucette, says Back to Batoche celebrations have been expanded from their usual 3 days to 8.

They are July 18th to 25th at Batoche National Historic Park, and will include a ceremony to honour those who fought and died at Batoche.

Organizers are looking for descendants of the fallen from all sides during the Battle of Batoche in 1885 to come forward and participate in the ceremony.

There will also be an attempt to break a Guinness World Record for the largest spoons ensemble.

A new addition this year is the Artisan's Village, which includes a Metis Film Festival and theatre productions like The Trial of Louis Riel, and the Batoche Musical.

Love the Victoria Day long weekend !! The Manitoba Metis Federation's general election is now in full swing and thus far the action has been fairly tame. I have visited a heck of a lot of people recently from all areas of the city and demographics. As for myself ; Elect Derryl Sanderson MMF Winnipeg Region Board Of Director the campaign has been growing steadily. To tell you the truth, it would have been a lot nicer to have created a cash war chest beforehand. The advertising dollars will be limited. We are banking on a star-studded lineup of Metis entertainment event (A Metis Entertainment Event !!) that we hope will garner some much needed revenue. I have been giving out tickets to single mothers and other people's not financially flush, so this grassroots people's campaign continues. Despite the lack of resources, we appear to gaining strength !! The Internet, its' appeal to youth and middle age, will continue to be a major portal for our message...........Support Ron Chartrand, MMF Winnipeg Region Vice-President and Jack Fleming also have Facebooked themselves a following. Oddly enough Yvon Dumont's co-host on the Metis Music Jamboree, Dave Charette , is on team Fleming and has launched into some questionable attacks on the popular Chartrand. I call it old school Metis politics but if that what Jack and Dave feel works with today's Metis, we'll see at the polls. Frank Godon will arrive on Manitoba soil tomorrow and is inviting people to join him in a rally upon his arrival. The MMF Presidential hopeful to unseat incumbent David Chartrand, will arrive at Winnipeg airport at 8:25 pm. I knew that somewhere between Jan 1 and Sept 30 2010 there would be an election - everyone did, so are you suggesting that we put 9 months of our lives on hold to wait for when David Chartrand tells us he wants an election. I don't think so - all of my ducks were in a row, even when they tried to challenge me, I had all those bases covered, and if it hadn't been for having to be here for my daughters birth and to honor a contract I would have been home the day the election was called. I actually applaud David for calling this election the way he called it, as it proves that he doesn't want any serious competition to his leadership. In 2 days I'll be there and I'll be shaking hands and greeting people and giving them my platform as to what I can do for them as their president and what they can do for themselves. When I become president this will change and people will know 4 years in advance when the next elections are. The way it should be. Oh and its rocket scientist - I don't think there is such a thing as a rocket surgeon - never knew rockets to need surgery :)

Frank..understand this, Speaking about Metis Culture and history is one thing, being apart of it is another.

Believe me when I say this Frank, I know my Culture and History, and I have been apart of my Culture and History for a long, long time.

From "Metis Days" as a youngster in Duck Bay, to square dancing as Manitoba Champions with Camper-Bay United all over prairies as a youth, to my Project on Louis Riel's Rise and Fall of the rebellion in high school, to Campaigning with the
Hon. Yvon Dumont through the parkland as a young adult, and right up to my run for board of director for the MMF Winnipeg Region, heck, even my time with the Local Management Board here in Winnipeg//..one thing has always stood out, I have always been true to my beliefs and my word.

Some can call it stubbornness. Some may call it old school politics. I call it being real. Or as my friends Jules says', "Keeping it Riel." But this isn't about me.
Whatever it is...I've always been fair and honest. And Let me be real honest here Frank, While your doing whatever you doing,
where ever you doing it, Mr. Chartrand has launched a massive province wide campaign with huge billboards, air time, posters, and to put it into simple basics, real person to person handshakes and smiles. Cause that's all anybody really wants at the end of the day Frank, is a smile.

No matter what....I've always said this, "Some times it's not what you know..it's who you know." And anyone I've ever debated with,
whether or not i was wrong or not, has always had a handshake and a smile for me Frank. Because at the end of the day, when all the fighting is over, we're all people.

Lamouche, who has been a councillor in Metis settlement about 85 km northeast of High Prairie for about 20 years, said it is important young people return to the community once they receive an education.

He returned after obtaining a management degree.

"On one hand, I want our kids to go out and experience mainstream society, to be able to compete with society, to be contributors to society," he told CBC News.

"And on the other hand, you know, you want to be able to help the people at home.

"In Gift Lake, now, we've lived there, we had made a deal with the government, we called the Metis Settlements Accord. The deal has come and gone. We had enough money to build and, you know, try to bring our community up to a certain standard, which, I think, in my opinion, failed miserably."

Gift Lake isn't a stranger to problems

The unemployment rate in the community sits at 40 to 50 per cent.

Many homes are crowded and dilapidated.

There are also problems with drugs and alcohol, officials said.

As for education, some students just aren't interested in furthering themselves.

Gift Lake's local school is run by the troubled Northland School Division.

Concerns about student achievement and staff turnover prompted Education Minister Dave Hancock to fire the entire board in January.

An official trustee now runs the division, which covers schools in a vast swatch of northern Alberta.

Some students don't come to classes for weeks, even months at a time.

One Grade 2 student has missed one out of every three days this year, CBC News learned.

Poor attendance - as a lot of teachers pointed out - leads to poor test scores.

According to government statistics, only 19.6 per cent of Northland students completed high school within three years of entering Grade 10. The provincial average is 70.7 per cent.

Some attribute the problem to the fact half the communities served by Northland don't have a high school program, forcing students to go out of town.

For students who do want an education, there are few jobs to bring them back, forcing them to leave Gift Lake and not return.

Young people need role models in Gift Lake

Lamouche wants to see more people like Sharon Anderson.

Anderson, who grew up in Gift Lake, returned to the community after obtaining her university degree in social work.

Anderson, who chairs the community's local school board, said young people need more role models in order to come back to Gift Lake after their schooling.

"I'd love to see more of our people going out there and becoming teachers to come and teach our kids," she said.

"When, you know, you talk about the issue of recruiting and retaining teachers, what better resource would be than to home-grow your teachers, right?

MMF Election 2010.... Week One

Someone asked me last week ; What will your new job be if your elected ?? I stood there and quickly replied "I'll be spray painting at 8:00 am the next day.....can't celebrate too long, gotta make cash !! I have been assured there will be many long nights and working weekends :). I want to make it perfectly clear that my running for board of directors for Winnipeg Region , does not entitle me to a new cushy Manitoba Metis Federation

job. I will be sitting on the board to attempt to enact policy, aid our people and open the MMF up like never before. Although I have gained more insight into the MMFs operation than most (thanks to the awesome people who share here and my own involvement), I know that there will be a sharp learning curve to the MMFs board procedures and policies. I realize that this is no mom and pop organization (MMF prez to run again | Manitoba | News | Winnipeg Sun) I also am wise enough to know that the MMF has personnel that have made the corporation the success it has become...............My platform issues : an affordable rental housing program similar to those run in Calgary and Vancouver. These cities have successful working templates that we can learn from. The government has made a firm five year commitment to affordable housing so the Metis seem to be a natural fit into that mix ; a new approach to youth and at risk youth(ties into my housing plan). An arts program that will truly aid the artist in their craft and career. I also have many other issues that I would be attempting to tackle during my four year mandate, but the above are priority, Elect Derryl Sanderson MMF Winnipeg Region Board Of Director.............Things are not looking to rosy for Presidential candidate Frank Godon. His cuz' Will has made a challenge to Frank's candidacy, based upon Frank's extended stay in Russia while teaching. From my time in Metis politics, expect the challenge to be accepted by the Chief electoral officer ; then there were two.....who the heck is Robert Nolin ?.........had a hairy time in getting my nomination in. I had 25 people sign my nomination(including a couple of big names in Metis politics and arts) so I has assumed all was right with the paperwork. Wrong !! At 4:43pm(deadline was 5) The chief electoral office phoned to inform me that they could not accept seven of my names submitted. So after getting the required signatures, viola !! I am in...........I don't imagine we'll be seeing to many board of director changes this election as the "snap" took a lot of prospective candidates out of the mix. You have to keep on your toes in this game of politics as we all knew this quick call was a possibility. I was ready with platform, people and policy, but am way short on the finances. Anyone want to help, give me a call...........In what was the worst kept secret, not MMF election related but very noteworthy, was the announcement from Kevin chief that he was seeking the NDP nomination to fill NDP's Judy Wasylycia-Leis's vacated seat. Good man, good choice to represent the area......By the way the last blue collar person that got elected to office was a drywaller by trade. The man elected turned out to be this Metis rep ; MMF Winnipeg Region :: Board Member Ron Chartrand . Pretty good company if I'm elected. The learned MMF voters can see the value in an honest, educated, hardworking. representative. .....week two coming up and an announcement regarding my entertainment filled rally/fundraiser.

Background

At the MNA’s 81st Annual General Assembly held in Drayton Valley in August

2009, MNA members passed an Ordinary Resolution to “phase out the red-and white

laminated cards by August 31, 2009.” (Ordinary Resolution #5).

The intent of Ordinary Resolution # 5 was that the MNA’s old “red-and-white

cards” would no longer be accepted for voting purposes at MNA Annual General

Assemblies or for future MNA elections. It also intended to ensure that all

existing MNA members completed the new MNA citizenship registration process

in order for them to be a candidate for elected office, hold an elected office or

hold an appointed position in the MNA.

Ordinary Resolution # 5 did not have the effect of legally changing the MNA

Bylaws. In order to achieve the intent of Ordinary Resolution # 5, amendments

to the MNA Bylaws are required. However, the fact that Ordinary Resolution # 5

was passed by MNA members gave the MNA Provincial Council strong direction

to move forward on implementing the resolution’s desired intent.

Why are these Bylaws changes important to the MNA?

These Bylaw changes are important because they are a part of a Métis Nation’s

ongoing journey towards the recognition of Métis rights and self-government in

Alberta. Just some of the milestones we have marked in this journey include:

• the formation of the Métis Association of Alberta in 1932,

• the creation of the Métis Betterment Act and Métis Settlements in 1938,

• Métis inclusion in Canada’s Constitution in 1982,

• negotiating the Métis Nation Accord as a part of the failed Charlottetown

Accord in 1991,

• centralizing the issuance of MNA membership cards in 1991;

• declaring our nationhood and adopting a new name (Métis Nation of

Alberta) and Bylaws in 1991,

• adoption of the National Definition of Métis in 2002,

• recognition of Métis rights by the Supreme Court of Canada in R. v.

Powley in 2003,

• negotiating the Interim Métis Harvesting Agreement with the Alberta

Government to recognize Métis harvesting rights in 2004,

• beginning to issue new MNA Métis Identification Cards based on the

National Definition of Métis in 2006,

• adopting a MNA Harvesting Policy and Métis Rights Action Plan to defend

Métis rights in Alberta in 2007,

• defending Métis harvesting rights in the courts beginning in 2008.

Throughout this ongoing journey, we have always recognized the need to

exercise our inherent right to determine “who we are as a people” is a priority.

The right to determine who is Métis only belongs to the Métis Nation.

Governments do not have a place determining who is “Métis” – only we do.

However, if we do not move forward on exercising our inherent right to determine

our own citizenship, governments and courts will try to fill the void. We have

already seen the Alberta Government attempting to do this with respect to Métis

harvesting rights. This is unacceptable and violates our inherent right of selfdetermination.

By moving forward with these Bylaw changes, the MNA will be

able to defend our inherent rights as a people and be in a better position to

challenge governments who attempt to determine “who is Métis”.

These Bylaw changes are the next important milestone in our self-government

journey of Alberta Métis because they represent a commitment to ensuring only

Métis will decide who are Métis. As well, these Bylaws changes will strengthen

the strength and credibility of the MNA Registry, as the only legitimate system to

identify Métis rights-holders throughout Alberta.

What’s the difference between “membership” and “citizenship”?

Our people have often said that if we expect others to recognize and treat us as

a nation, we must act like one. Clubs and associations have “members” –

nations have “citizens.” The ultimate goal of the MNA’s citizenship registration

process and these proposed Bylaws changes is to move the MNA from a

membership-based organization to a citizenship-based Métis government. We

recognize that this goal will take time, but we are well on our way.

In the past, the MNA has issued membership cards to “Lifetime Members”. Many

of these cards were given out under previous definitions of Métis that were in the

MNA Bylaws. We also know that some membership cards were given out to

people who were not Métis, who were or have become registered Indians or to

people who did not provide genealogical proof of Métis ancestry to the MNA.

Simply put, these realities hinder the MNA’s claims that it is a Métis government

that is solely mandated and represented by citizens of the Métis Nation.

In order to address these challenges, after the passing of the National Definition

of Métis in 2002, the MNA moved forward on setting up a standardized

registration process for all new Métis applicants as well as standardized reregistration

process for existing MNA members. Individuals who completed this

new registration/re-registration process were issued new Métis Identification

Cards beginning in 2006. It is the MNA’s position that all individuals who

complete the citizenship registration process are citizens of the Métis Nation and

have rights as a part of the Métis Nation.

The proposed Bylaws use the terms “Lifetime Members” and “Métis Citizens”,

what’s the difference?

All existing MNA members are described as “Lifetime Members” in the current

MNA Bylaws. This means that anyone who has received one of the old MNA

“red-and-white” cards or is on the MNA Registry’s membership list is a MNA

member as a “Lifetime Member”.

Métis Citizens are MNA members who have completed the new citizenship

registration process and have been issued a Métis Identification Number and a

new Métis Identification Card. In the proposed Bylaws, these individuals are

identified as “Métis Citizens.”

With these Bylaw changes, what happens to MNA members who don’t go

through the re-registration process to get new Métis Identification Cards?

Since 2006, close to 15,000 individuals have gone through and successfully

completed the new Métis citizenship registration process (almost 40% of the

MNA’s total membership of 40,000 individuals). In order to encourage as many

MNA members as possible to complete the new citizenship registration process,

a cut off date of August 1st, 2010 is being proposed in the new Bylaws. This will

have given all MNA members close to 5 years to complete the re-registration

process.

With these proposed Bylaw changes, if a MNA member does not complete the

new citizenship registration process by August 1st, 2010, they will still remain a

MNA member (i.e., Lifetime Member). However, effective August 1st, 2010, they

will not be able to vote at MNA assemblies and meetings, be a candidate for

elected office, hold elected office or be appointed to a position within the MNA –

until they complete the new citizenship registration process. There are several

reasons why the MNA believes this is a fair compromise proposal:

• By August 2010, MNA members will have had close to 5 years to

complete the re-registration process and 15,000 other Métis have done

just that already. If there is not some cut-off date, there is no incentive for

remaining MNA members to go through the re-registration process.

• Alberta Métis want to ensure that they are only being represented by other

Métis in their Métis government. The only way to ensure this is by making

it a requirement that all individuals representing the Métis Nation at the

local, regional and provincial levels are Métis Citizens.

• If the MNA is truly the government of the Métis people in Alberta, the MNA

needs to ensure that the people making decisions on behalf of the Métis

people at Annual General Assemblies and local, regional and provincial

meetings are Métis Citizens.

• The MNA is not “removing” or “getting rid of” members. Existing MNA

members will remain “Lifetime Members” until they choose to no longer be

or until they choose to go through the citizenship registration process.

The MNA is not pushing people out – it is just developing a system that

respects Lifetime Members, but also respects the Métis Nation’s desire to

advance its rights and self-government agenda.

• The MNA is unsure on whether the current funding provided by the

Federal Government to the MNA Registry will continue. The MNA wants

to make sure it registers as many of its citizens as possible while it still has

funding to do so.

How does this advance our rights-based agenda?

In the historic Powley decision, the Supreme Court wrote the following:

While determining membership in the Métis community might not be as simple as

verifying membership in, for example, an Indian band, this does not detract from

the status of Métis people as full-fledged rights-bearers. As Métis communities

continue to organize themselves more formally and to assert their constitutional

rights, it is imperative that membership requirements become more standardized

so that legitimate rights-holders can be identified. [emphasis added]

The MNA’s registration process is exactly the type of standardized system the

Supreme Court of Canada encouraged Métis to create. Through our citizenship

registration process, we are identifying rights-holders, rather than leaving it to

other governments or the courts.

Our citizenship registration process will assist us in our rights claims from

harvesting, to the duty to consult, to Métis land claims, because it is consistent

with the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in the Powley case. In litigation,

consultations and future negotiations with governments, we will be able to

unquestionably state that we are representing Métis rights-holders.

Notably, one of the criticisms that was used to attack and ultimately kill the

Interim Métis Harvesting Agreement was that the old “red-and-white” cards were

unreliable for identifying Métis rights-holders. That criticism will no longer be able

to be used by critics with respect to our new Métis Identification Cards being

used for Métis harvester identification purposes.

What are other Métis governments doing from Ontario westward?

All Métis governments are undertaking similar citizenship registration or reregistration

processes across in order to strengthen their registries:

• all existing Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) members have until

September 1st, 2012 to provide their genealogical documentation to the

MMF and all new applicants require proof of Métis ancestry,

• the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan has recently established a centralized

Registry in Saskatoon and is now re-registering its existing membership,

• the Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) has established a citizenship

registry, but also registers members who do not have the same rights as

Métis citizens in the MNBC’s governance structure, and

• the Métis Nation of Ontario is verifying its existing membership based on

the National Definition of Métis.

It is worthy to note that the MNA Registry has been able to register and reregistered

the highest number of Métis citizens of all the Métis National Council’s

Governing Members over the last 5 years.

Manitoba Metis Head To The Polls On June 10th

The only Aboriginal organization that hold province wide elections, will again be proving that democracy is alive and well in the Manitoba Metis political arena.
According to insiders, MN & S has been informed that the Manitoba Metis Federation will hold its' general elections on June 10th, 2010. While the chief electoral officer has yet to rubber stamp the boards selected date, the sources are good.
The contest is just beginning and with the connections and inside info I have gleaned over the past few years, I am again contemplating what role I will take this year. One thing for certain, I will be deeply involved in this 2110 election. I feel I do possess the qualifications and passion to help lead our people in Winnipeg throughthe next four years and also have more than enough political knowledge in the Metis area to be a highly effective campaign consultant.......what the future holds for me will become clearer in the next few weeks.
Now, who's in the running this year ?
I do know that Davey Chartrand has announced his intent to again run for President. The controversial and progressive thinking Frank Godon is thus far, the only announced challenger for the Presidency. Jack Fleming has for some inexplicable reason, has decided to take on VP for Winnipeg region Ron Chartrand.(who will be running and should win in a cakewalk) For now, that's all I will announce until further rumours have been confirmed.
I urge all to keep a watchful ear on David's biggest media cheerleader Ray St. Germain, the host of the MMF sponsored Metis Hour X 2 weekly radio show.
The CRTC was informed of some democratic irregularities that occurred on the radio show previously and I trust that Davey ads will be blocked this year on the Metis Hour X 2.

Current Manitoba Metis Federation President David Chartrand has announced this morning, the MMF has requested the Chief electoral officer set a date for the MMF elections which will now be held a mere two months away.
Chartrand wasted no time in announcing his intent to run for the MMF's top job but also showed a marked proactive movement towards democracy by stating he will NOT promote himself nor his platforms during the MMF Metis Hour X 2 weekly radio program.......now to keep an ear open for the traditional Dave Chartrand praising from the host of the program, Ray St. Germain.

Former MMF Presidential Candidate To Contest For Top Winnipeg Region Job

Jack Fleming, former executive director of the Indian and Metis Friendship Centre and past Manitoba Metis Federation Presidential candidate, has announced his intention to seek the position of Vice President, Winnipeg region for the Manitoba Metis Federation. Fleming was soundly defeated by current MMF President David Chartrand during an earlier campaign, and it also marked the first time that I witnessed Metis politics..the good, the bad and the VERY ugly. I was a member of the Fleming team and it was the actions of a few of Fleming's key people that caused me to support Chartrand...........does the promo campaign material "For the record" ring a bell anyone ??
If current Winnipeg region VP Ron Chartrand decides to run again, expect a landslide win for the very like-able Metis leader.
The Manitoba Metis Federation election will be held later this year. Current MMF President David Chartrand has strongly indicated his intent to seek an unprecedented fourth term as MMF head honcho.

Alberta Metis President On Harvesting Case

I am writing to update MNA members on a few developments in our ongoing “Hunt for Justice.”The closing argument for our Métis harvesting rights trial in Medicine Hat will now be held in June 2010 instead of May. Specifically, the next dates of the trial will be:

May 11& 12 Defence Expert on 2006 Census Data

June 22, 23 & 24 Closing Arguments for Trial

All of the proceedings are open to the public. For those of you interested in attending these upcoming parts of the trial, it will be held at the Medicine Hat Courthouse (1 First Street SE) from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily.

Once again, I encourage all of you to mark your calendars now and try to attend court in Medicine Hat on June 22, 23 and 24. Specifically, on June 22 you will get to hear the condensed version of all the evidence that was presented over the last year from our Métis lawyers – Jean Teillet and Jason Madden. The Alberta Crown will likely make their arguments on June 23. June 24 will only be used if the Defence and Crown arguments are not finished on June 23.

After closing arguments in June 2010, we will then have to wait for a decision from the Provincial Court. I am hopeful that we will receive a decision from the court sometime in 2010, so we can move out of the courtroom and back to a place where the Alberta Government recognizes and respects Métis rights.

Even though I remain steadfast in my belief that this litigation was unnecessary if the Alberta Government had only continued to recognize Métis harvesting rights and Canada’s Constitution. I take solace in the fact that our ongoing ‘hunt for justice’ has brought our people closer together and it has allowed us to better understand and appreciate our history as Alberta Métis.

Our unity and solidarity across all of Alberta on Métis rights issues is inspirational. I truly believe our ancestors would be proud that we are continuing to stand up and protect the rights they always believed we had and what they fought so hard to protect for us.

I would like to thank all the Métis youth, women, men, harvesters and Elders who have shown their support in our ‘hunt for justice’. Your unwavering support has made the Métis Nation stronger and a victory in this case will be celebrated by all Métis in Alberta.
